The federal employee benefits law, ERISA, is the most important law for employer-sponsored health plans. ERISA is least understood by health care providers and billing and coding professionals in the United States.

ERISA stands for Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. ERISA is the federal law governing and regulating any claim dispute and reimbursement from health insurance obtained through employment in private sectors. ERISA governs or controls more than 90% of non-Medicare claims yet, ERISA has been almost completely misunderstood by health care providers and reimbursement professionals for decades. Yet, the supreme court has consistently held the power of this comprehensive law that benefits all health care providers.
